Garrett has taught bassoonists of all skill levels from beginners through college students. During his time student teaching he started students on the instrument and guided them through their first months on the bassoon, reinforcing strong fundamentals and forming good habits. While at SUNY Stony Brook, he was the instructor for undergraduate bassoon. He taught applied bassoon lessons and reed-making in this capacity. He was also on faculty at Five Towns College where he taught applied bassoon along with Woodwind Methods I and II and chamber music. He would also coach chamber music to high schoolers and act as a woodwind coach with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.
